Biography

Henrique Meirelles has a long and successful career in the public and private sector. He was the longest-serving president of the Central Bank of Brazil, between 2003 and 2011, a period of economic growth, job creation and inflation control.

Once again in charge of the economy, as Minister of Finance, Meirelles pulled Brazil out of the deepest recession in its history with institutional advances made between 2016 and 2017, as the public spending limitation, the new State-Owned Companies Law and the labour reform.

In private sector, he was President of BankBoston, where he worked for 28 years. He was also chairman of Lazard Americas and senior advisor at KKR. He was a member of the Council of Lloyds of London and of the Board of Azul Airlines, besides other companies as Raytheon Corporation, Bestfoods, Champion International, BankBoston Corporation and FleetBoston Financial.

Meirelles also guided the development of the Banco Original digital platform and was board member of Harvard Kennedy School of Government, MIT Sloan School of Management and Boston College Carroll School of Management.

Henrique Meirelles is the founder and president of the Viva o Centro Association, which mission, since 1990, is the downtown’s recovery of São Paulo.

In 2002, he was elected as the most voted congressman in the history of his home state of Goiás. In 2018, Meirelles has run for the Brazilian Presidency.

Henrique Meirelles is an engineer by the University of São Paulo (USP), with post graduation in economics, a MBA by the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro and the AMP at Harvard Business School.
