Biography

Axel Bendiek is Head of Treasury and Investor Relations at the Ministry of Finance of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW). The State of NRW is one of the major regional borrowers in Europe with a funding program of EUR 15bn for 2020. A lawyer and economist by training, Mr. Bendiek covered a wide range of topics since he joined the State’s financial administration. From 2005 to 2006, he was tax counsel and head of a Value Added Tax (VAT) Audit Group. Previously, he worked for the law faculty of the University of Hagen, training criminal defense lawyers.

In 2007, Mr. Bendiek joined the Ministry of Finance. He served as fiscal policy counsel in the budget department until 2009, with a concentration on the new debt brake for the Federation and the Länder and the issue of long-term sustainability of Länder budgets. From 2009 to 2012, Mr. Bendiek served as legal counsel for the tax department, with a concentration on tax fraud and tax procedure.

Mr. Bendiek is a graduate of Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität, Münster and Dedman School of Law, Southern Methodist University, Dallas, Texas
