Biography

Doug joined SMBC in January 2016 to be responsible for economic, market, and political analysis of Latin American countries in support of SMBC’s portfolio in the region. This entails preparing analyses and presentations for senior management of SMBC, and also writing regular publications on Latin America for distribution within SMBC and to external clients. Also, there is collaboration with the country risk department in Tokyo to determine the correct internal rankings of each country. In addition, Doug works closely with SMBC’s front office, treasury, and capital markets teams in NY to present Latin American views to their clients.

Prior to SMBC, Doug was a Director on the Emerging Markets team at TIAA-CREF Asset Management in NY, and Chief Economist for Latin America at Standard Chartered Bank in NY. Before that, he was the Head of Latin American Strategy and Economics at IDEAglobal in NY and an International Economist at the U.S. Treasury Department in Washington DC.

Doug has a Ph.D. in Economics from Columbia University in New York with specializations in International Macroeconomics and Econometrics. His Ph.D. thesis was published in the Journal of Development Economics in 2001. Doug was also an Adjunct Professor at Columbia and at Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies in Washington DC.
